Planning an Extension Program to Develop Farmers’ Knowledge of Marketing Operations in Tomato Crop at El-Beherah Governorate

Abstract

This research aims to planning an extension program to develop farmer’s knowledge of marketing operations in tomato crop by identifying the current situation of the respondents in relation to some of their distinctive characteristics, their levels of knowledge of marketing operations in tomato crop, to identify problems which facing respondents in marketing tomato crop and finally to suggest a work plan for an extension program to develop farmer’s knowledge of marketing operations in tomato crop in the research area based on the results of the research.
This research was conducted at El- Beherah Governorate, Abo-Homs District was chosen randomly among governorate’s districts and the same way the villages of Gawad Hosny, Deer Ams and ELsawy Shokr were chosen. A systematic random sample of 248 respondents was taken, Percentages, frequencies, arithmetic mean, standard division were used to the data analyses and interpret the results. The most important results of this research were:
- 95.5% of respondents had moderate and low knowledge level of marketing operations in tomato crop.
- The most important problems facing respondents in marketing tomato crop were: lack of export companies in the area, instability of selling price of the crop and weak competition and monopoly of some traders to buy and pricing tomato crop.
- The research suggests an extension program to develop farmer’s knowledge of marketing operations in tomato crop.
