Abstract
The study problem was that Egypt produces approximately one-fifth of the world’s artichoke production, but the volume of its exports is not proportional to this production, and large quantities of artichoke exports are made in the fresh, not the processed form. The research mainly aims to track the various productions, and processing stages and identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and strengths (SWOT), of the artichoke value chain. The research studied artichoke value chain in Kafr El-Dawar and Abu El-Matamir Centers in El-Behira Governorate and its general characteristics.
The research results showed that:
- The most important actors in the value chain are: a) production actors including suppliers of production inputs, farmers, importers; b) harvest and basic processing actors including traders (Galab), artichoke processing stations (Nawalat); and c) marketing actors, artichoke food processing factories, local markets, local retailers, HORECA, Hyper markets, supermarkets, and exporters.
- Farmers and owners of processing stations need to be supported in the face of the monopolistic situation of factories and exporters, concluding contracts between the parties and following up on their fulfillment, in addition to make the information regarding market available to them, especially with regard to external prices, export opportunities, and specifications required for export to strengthen the value chain actors, and to strengthen the negotiating position in particular.
- Furthermore, the farmers need new varieties of artichoke that are climate change resistant, provision of technical assistance through designated extension service, and the availability of important agriculture information through easy to access extension messages and brochures.
- Nawalat, identified that:
- The raw materials quality needs to be enhanced through supporting farmers by specific trainings, as they are the main suppliers of artichoke, to ensure that best agriculture practices have been implemented.
- develop the capacitates of the female and male labors in the Nawalat through specific trainings covering food safety, food quality and export requirements.
- For the women working in the Nawalat economic empowerment, increasing their income could be achieved through:
i) Providing training programs for developing personal and occupational skills for women.
ii) Facilitating women’s access to credit opportunities to improve their economic situation through micro projects.
iii) Facilitating women’s access to different markets to promote their production.
iv) Involving them in decision-making processes related to their work.
