The Role of Agricultural Extension and Agricultural Cooperative Societies in Enhancing Sustainable Livelihoods for Farmers in Fayoum Governorate

Abstract

The research aimed to identify the distinctive features and characteristics of the respondents, identify the role of the agricultural extension agency and agricultural cooperatives in enhancing sustainable livelihoods for the farmers surveyed, identify the gap between the actual and expected role of the agricultural extension agency and cooperatives in enhancing sustainable livelihoods, and identify the significance of the differences between the degrees expressing the role of the agricultural extension agency and agricultural cooperatives in enhancing sustainable livelihoods.
The research was conducted in Fayoum Center, which is the largest center in Fayoum Governorate in terms of the number of holders. Two villages were chosen randomly, namely Kafr El Nil village  and Mandara village,  the sample size was 330 respondents.
The results showed an increase in the overall role of the extension apparatus in promoting sustainable livelihoods, as 62.1% mentioned this, compared to 14.6% who reported a decrease in its role in promoting sustainable livelihoods. More than half of the respondents (59.4%) reported that the role of cooperative societies was average in promoting sustainable livelihoods, compared to 23.3% who reported an increase in their role. The results of the t-test also showed the difference between the average scores expressing the role of the agricultural extension apparatus and cooperative societies in promoting sustainable livelihoods. Sustainable living The difference is significant at 0.01, in favor of the Agricultural Extension Agency.
