Impact of Internet Addiction Among a Sample of Adolescent in Alexandria City

Abstract

This research was conducted to study the factors associated with Internet addiction among a sample of adolescents in Alexandria.
The analytical descriptive method was used, the sample was selected from (21) schools in Alexandria Governorate.
The totale sample size was (400) individual, (195) females, (205) males were between the ages of 11-18 years. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, a seven axes questionnaire was used, personal and family data, Internet addiction measurement, household climate scale, lifestyle scale,health stauts, internet addicition measurement, Taylor's anxiety scale and Beck's depression scale.
The results showed that 59.25% of the research sample had an average addiction to the Internet while 24.25% were low addicted and 16.50% showed high addiction. The percentage of the sample of those with a good family climate was 57.25% and 41.75% of the average level family climate. 65.50% had moderate life style compared to 31.25% of the sample who were living in high level of life style.
Also the results revealed that 64.75% of the sample their general health status in compared to 26.75%, had a good health status.
The average rate of anxiety was 56.5%, followed by a high level of anxiety, (23,25%) and 20.25% of those without anxiety. The percentage of the sample who did not suffer from any degree of depression was 43.3%, compared to 45% with mild depression and 11.2% with moderate depression.
The results showed that there was a negative correlation at the level (0.05) between the fathers' level of education and the degree of addiction to the Internet. There was also a statistically significant correlation at the Level of (0.01) between the hometowen and the level of Internet addiction, at the level of (0.01) between the educational level of the mother, and the level of Internet addiction. There was also a significant correlation at the level of (0.01) between the number of family members and the level of Internet addiction. There was also a significant correlation at the level of (0.05) between the gender of the sample and the level of Internet addiction.
There was a positive correlation relationship at the level of (0.01) between the addiction of the Internet and both of anxiety and depression, while there was a negative correlative relationship at the level of (0.01) between Internet addiction and lifestyle. There was also a signification relationship between the sample addiction to the Internet and both of the level of health status and the level of the household climate at the level of (0.05).
