Social Study of the Egyptian and Non-Egyptian TV Dramas from the Viewpoint of Rural Women in Assiut Governorate, Egypt

Abstract

The research aimed to: 1- Identify the extent respondents’ exposure to Egyptian and non-Egyptian TV dramas and the factors affecting it, 2- Determine the rural women’s motives of exposure to the studied dramas, 3- Identify the degree of respondents’ preference for some technical aspects of the studied dramas, and the differences between them, 4- Identify role of television drama in spreading social values ​​from respondents’ opinions, and differences between such opinions. Data were collected from a sample of 100 rural women in the village of El-Hawata El-Sharqiah, Dayrut District, Assiut Governorate using the questionnaire form during July and August 2021. Percentages, relative weight, simple correlation coefficient and ANOVA test were used for data analysis. Results showed that the majority of respondents (62%) prefer Egyptian drama, followed by Indian (58%), Turkish (50%), and finally Syrian (18%). Results also showed that the most important motives for rural women to watch drama is “to learn about people's lives (86.15%)”, followed by enjoying aesthetic scenes (74.75%). Finding also showed that respondents prefer the soundtracks in drama (69.1%), grace and looks of the actors (80.2%), and they admired the natural scenes (with a relative weight of 85.3%). The results showed that "respondents know about the various professions and places that they do not know (82.7%) and drama shows the disadvantages that exist in society (72.1%) were the most frequent positive and negative values, respectively. The results also showed that Syrian drama is carrying positive values, while the Egyptian drama is carrying the negative ones.
